General description

GranuCult® BPLS agar (modified) contains Brilliant green that inhibits the growth of the accompanying Gram-positive microbial flora, Salmonella typhi, and Shigella. However, the lower concentration of brilliant green in the modified BPLS agar does not strongly inhibit other Salmonella spp. The medium contains both lactose and sucrose. The color change (red to yellow) in the pH indicator Phenol red indicates the degradation of lactose to acid. Salmonellae do not ferment either lactose or sucrose and appear as red colonies surrounded by a bright red zone. Furthermore, in contrast to BPL agar, the sucrose in the medium allows identification of accompanying, weakly lactose-positive or lactose-negative, but sucrose-positive microorganisms.

Application

GranuCult® BPLS agar (modified) is a selective agar suitable for the isolation of salmonellae (except for S. typhi) from meat, meat products and other foodstuffs.
