General description

Sphingosine-1-phosphate is a phosphorylated sphingosine analog and is polar. It is terminally labelled by fluorescent nitrobenzo-2-oxa-1,3-diazole (NBD) group. Sphingosine-1-phosphate is abundantly stored in platelets.

Application

NBD sphingosine-1-phosphate has been used as a substrate in the detection of sphingosine-1-phosphate phosphatases (SPPase) enzymatic activity by in vitro assay.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) initiates DNA synthesis. It is also involved in cell division, cell growth and platelet activation. S1P mediates cell movement, differentiation and survival. It specifically stimulates endothelial cells.

Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) is a bioactive sphingolipid that activates a family of G protein coupled-receptors (GPCRs) implicated in mammalian development, angiogenesis, immunity and tissue regeneration. S1P functions as a trophic factor for many cell types, including embryonic stem cells (ESCs). Sphingosine
