General description

Boric acid can be used as a Lewis acid catalyst in organic synthesis to facilitate various organic reactions, including dehydration, hydrolysis, decarboxylation, and condensation reactions. It produces different borate anions and salts and can react with alcohols to produce borate esters. It is also used as a buffering agent and pH adjuster.
Boric acid is a very weak acid, having pH in the range of 3.6-4.0. Coulometric method for the determination of boric acid has been reported.

Application

Boric acid can be used as a precursor to synthesize boron carbon oxynitride thin films by the atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) method using carbon-rich methane and nitrogen-rich ammonia.
