General description

Potassium iodide (KI) is a chemical compound that can be used as an iodide ion source for nucleophilic displacement reactions. During the electrochemical oxidation of aldehydes, it acts as a mediator. In the presence of an acid, it can cleave some ethers. KI can iodinate aromatic and organothallium compounds in the presence of an oxidizing agent. Additionally, it can form symmetrical thiosulfonic S-esters by reacting with sulfonyl chlorides.

Application

Potassium iodide is used as:
  • An iodine source in the synthesis of 1-iodoalkynes and iodophenols from alkynes and phenols using tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) as oxidant.
  • A catalyst in the synthesis of sulfonated oxindoles by arylsulfonylation of activated alkenes using sulfonylhydrazides as sulfonyl precursor, and water as solvent.
  • An oxidative degradation inhibitor to reduces oxidative degradation of monoethanolamine (MEA).

A simple color spot test for determining the presence of residual tetrabutylammonium (TBA) in various 18F-radiopharmaceuticals is described. The test can be performed in less than five minutes. Iodoplatinate-saturated TLC plates are initially spotted with the 18F-radiopharmaceutical to be tested
