General description

Tween®-20 is a polysorbate-based non-ionic surfactant. It is made up of three chemical units:
  • aliphatic ester chains that hinder biomolecules from nonspecific interactions
  • aliphatic chain that can be non-covalently adsorbed on a hydrophobic surface
  • hydrophilic terminal hydroxyl groups, which can be chemically modified for potential applications.

Application

Tween®-20 can be used as a structure-directing agent in the preparation of mesoporous oxide films because of its ability to promote textural properties of the films such as controllable crystallinity, film morphology, tailor-designed pore structure, high BET surface area, and controlled film thickness. It is also used in the synthesis of AuNPs/TWEEN/GO composites, where Tween®-20 acts as a reducing and immobilizing agent for AuNPs (Au nanoparticles) as well as a stabilizing agent for GO (graphene oxide).
Tween®-20 can also be used as an emulsifying, solubilizing, and wetting agent in a variety of liquid formulations.
Non-ionic detergent
