General description

Phosphorus trichloride is a slightly yellow or colorless fuming liquid, which finds applications in electrodeposition of metal on rubber and in the preparation of pesticides. It can undergo reaction with chlorine gas to form phosphorus pentachloride.
Rotational spectra of phosphorus trichloride has been studied in the microwave region. Its reaction with unsaturated compounds in the presence of diacetyl peroxide has been reported.

Application

Phosphorus trichloride may be used in the preparation of following:
  • alkylphosphonyl dichlorides
  • benzidronate
  • 4-(dibromomethyl)-substituted benzenes bearing a phosphorus functional group in the side chain
  • dinucleoside phosphorochloridite
