General description

Soy phosphatidylcholine (PC) (20%) or lecithin is isolated from Glycine Max (soybean). It is a phospholipid mixture with phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylinosine.

Application

Soy PC (20%) has been used for the preparation of liposomes.
Soy PC (20%) has been used:
  • in the preparation of liposomes
  • for fluorescence studies
  • for in vitro transcription and cell-free synthesis
  • for membrane permeabilization, light scattering and electron microscopy studies

Biochem/physiol Actions

Soy PC (20%) has wide applications as an emulsifier in the food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics industries. It is used to mimic biological membrane due to the presence of high polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Soy PC based liposomes is useful as carrier for anticancer drug, paclitaxel.
The sperm plasma membrane is known to contain L-α-phosphatidylcholine (PC). Thus, soy PC (20%) might be used in diluents for freezing semen. Lipids offer protection from cold shock. PC has many therapeutic use including supporting development and reproduction process. It is also known to be beneficial to liver and cardiovascular health.
