General description

The NARS2 gene with 14 exons is mapped to human chromosome 11q14.1, encodes mitochondrial asparaginyl-tRNA synthetase enzyme, which belongs to aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase (mt-aaRS) family. The encoded protein is expressed extensively in the brain, cochlear, vestibular systems and in several human tissues.

Application

Biochem/physiol Actions

Mitochondrial asparaginyl-tRNA synthetase (NARS2) plays a role in charging mitochondrial tRNAs with their associated amino acids. Aberrations in the expression of NARS2 lead to nonsyndromic hearing loss and Leigh syndrome.
