General description

Sodium nitroferricyanide(III) dihydrate (sodium nitroprusside dihydrate, SNP) is a dihydrate form of sodium nitroprusside. It is comprised of ferrous iron complexed with nitric oxide (NO) and five cyanide ions. It serves as a donor of nitric oxide.

Application

Sodium nitroferricyanide(III) dihydrate can be used as a reagent to produce nitric oxide radicals (NO) via UV radiation-induced photolysis. These radicals are employed for the construction of amino acid-based supramolecular hydrogels, which find potential applications in disease diagnosis and therapy including bioimaging, bio-detection, therapeutic delivery, and tissue engineering. Additionally, SNP also serves as a catalyst in the Phenate Method for the quantitative measurement of ammonia in water samples.
