General description

Work with ease and filter with confidence with Stericup® and Steritop® Filtration Systems.

Stericup ® and Steritop ® sterile filtration devices use reliable, high-performance membranes for optimum sterile filtration of laboratory reagents, buffers, and media. These devices combine superior flow rates and throughput with low non-specific binding and a stable, no-tip design.

This Steritop ® 250 mL bottle top 0.22 μm pore size polyethersulfone (PES) membrane filter unit can be used on bottles with 33 mm openings, , designed for vacuum applications.

Application

For Research Use Only
Stericup® and Steritop® systems are designed to reduce foaming and protein denaturation while maximizing flow and can be used for sterile vacuum filtration of aqueous solutions such as tissue culture media and biological fluids.

  • Tissue culture media +/- additives
  • Buffers
  • Biological solutions

Questions

1–10 of 15 Questions
  1. What leachables are detected during filtration processes using Stericup® filters?

    1 answer
    1. We have not performed extractables/leachables studies for our Stericup® filters.

      Helpful?

  2. The User Guide says “Use only glass or plastic bottles designed for vacuum applications”. Can you specify which bottles are compatible?

    1 answer
    1. Steritop® Quick Release bottle top units require a vacuum-rated receiver bottle with either a GL33 or GL45 mm closure thread as specified. Steritop® E bottle top units require a vacuum-rated receiver bottle with a GL45 mm closure thread. Bottles no larger than 2 L should be used.
      Glass bottles, GL33:
      • Wheaton media bottles (glass), 500 mL (Product Z364886)
      • Wheaton media bottles (glass), 1 L (Product Z364894)

  3. Which type of pump should be used with Stericup® and Steritop® vacuum filters?

Which type of pump should be used with Stericup® and Steritop® vacuum filters?

    1 answer
    1. We recommend our Chemical Duty Pump: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/product/mm/wp6111560

      Helpful?

  4. Can Stericup® bottles be placed inside freezers for long-term storage of media?

    1 answer
    1. You can successfully freeze and store many aqueous solutions (such as culture media) in Stericup® bottles at temperatures up to -20 °C (-4 °F). It is strongly recommended that you run a sample stability trial under your actual storage conditions prior to using Stericup® bottles for frozen storage.

      Helpful?

  5. What is the maximum processing volume for Stericup® and Steritop® filters? Can I add more volume after initial filtration?

    1 answer
    1. All Stericup® and Steritop® filters were developed for single-use application. The maximum volume is dependent on the receiver bottle capacity. Stericup® filters come with a receiver bottle with a specified maximum volume. For Steritop® filters, the maximum recommended volume is 2 L with an appropriate-sized receiver bottle. Larger processing volumes can result in membrane fouling, increase chance of spillage and contamination, and lead to possible airlock*.
*Note that devices with PES membranes can airlock if filtered to dryness. Some liquid must be left on top of the filter, then the system stopped, receiver changed or emptied, and more sample volume added before restart. This increases the chance of spillage.

  6. What tubing can be used with Stericup® and Steritop® vacuum filters?

What tubing can be used with Stericup® and Steritop® vacuum filters?

    1 answer
    1. Stericup® and Steritop® filters are fitted with a 1/4” tube adapter. We recommend 3/16 in. (4.8 mm) ID silicone tubing to fit this tube adapter: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/product/mm/xx7100004

      Helpful?

  7. What is the maximum vacuum pressure for filtration?

    1 answer
    1. 700 mm Hg (27.5” Hg, 0.9 bar) differential vacuum at 25 °C (77 °F)

      Helpful?

  8. Can Stericup® and Steritop® filters be used to prepare solutions that will be administered to patients?

    1 answer
    1. No, all Stericup® and Steritop® devices are Research Use Only.

      Helpful?

  9. What Bacterial Endotoxins Test is used?

    1 answer
    1. The test method used complies with USP 85 and EP 2.6.14 to ensure the absence of endotoxin in our products.

      Helpful?

  10. Can Stericup® and Steritop® filters be reused?

    1 answer
    1. All Stericup® and Steritop® filters were developed for single use, disposable processing.
