General description

Tetramethyl orthosilicate is a colorless organosilicon compound consisting of four methoxy groups bonded to a silicon atom. On hydrolysis, it produces silicon dioxide and methanol. It has been widely used in catalysis, synthesis of nanomaterials, ceramics, zeolites, and coating materials.[1][2]

Application

Tetramethyl orthosilicate can be used:
  • As a precursor to synthesize organic-inorganic coating materials by sol-gel processing method.[1]
  • As an efficient reagent for direct amidation of aliphatic and aromatic carboxylic acids with amines and anilines.[3]
  • As a precursor to fabricate SiO2 nanocomposite films by chemical vapor deposition(CVD) method.[2]
  • As a selective catalyst ofC3-methylation of indole.[4]
Used in the sol-gel synthesis of chromium-doped silicates and in the formation of hexagonal mesoporous silica layers.

Structure-switching, fluorescence-signaling DNA and RNA aptamers have been reported as highly versatile molecular recognition elements for biosensor development. While structure-switching DNA aptamers have been utilized for solid-phase sensing, equivalent RNA aptamers have yet to be successfully utilized in solid-phase sensors
