General description

Gentamicin, also known as gentiomycin C, is an aminoglycoside, which is naturally produced by Gram-negative bacteria. This antibiotic functions by preventing protein synthesis.[1] Gentamicin sulfate prevents the growth of both Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria, in vivo and in vitro. In tissue culture, gentamicin sulfate is used to inhibit the growth of various strains of mycoplasma.[2]

Application

Gentamicin solution has been used as an antibiotic component in eukaryotic cell culture[3][4][5][6][7][8] and bacterial culture.[9][10][11]
Gentamicin sulfate is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used as a selection agent (gentamicin-resistance gene) in molecular biology and cell culture applications.[12][13] This product is formulated to contain 50 mg/mL Gentamicin in deionized water and is recommended for use in eukaryotic cell culture at a volume of 1 milliliter per liter.
Gentamicin sulfate solution has been used as a component of different types of culture media.[14]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Mode of Action: Gentamicin inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 30S subunit of the ribosome.

Antimicrobial spectrum: Includes Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, including strains resistant to tetracycline, chloramphenicol, kanamycin and colistin, particularly strains of Pseudomonas, Proteus, Staphylococcus and Streptococcus.
Gentamicin is recommended for treating sepsis during emergency treatment. It is an alternate to ceftriaxone for treating genital infection.

Other Notes

Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside complex produced by fermentation of Micromonospora purpurea or M. echinospora. It is used as the sulfate salt. There are three components, each consisting of five basic nitrogens and requiresing five equivalents of sulfuric acid per mole of gentamicin base.

Disclaimer

The product is stable at 37° for 5 days and is stored at 2-8°C.
