General description

CD23 is a 45 kDa type II membrane glycoprotein belonging to the C-type lectin family, and is identical to the low affinity IgE receptor (FceRII) (Kikutani, 1987; Aubry, 1987). CD23 is primarily expressed on B cells and monocytes including a strong expression on EBV-transformed B lymphoblasts (Sarfati, 1997; Sarfati, 1995). CD23 is also present on a large variety of other cells such as T cells, eosinophils, platelets, Langerhans cells, and a subset of thymic epithelial cells (Sarfati, 1995). However, CD23 is absent in a large number of normal non-lymphoid human tissues, such as, central nervous system, endocrine glands, gastrointestinal, respiratory, urinary, and female/male reproductive system, skin, bone, cartilage, connective tissue, muscles, peripheral nerves, vessels, mesothelium, synovium, placenta, and umbilical cord (Pallesen, 1987). Anti-CD23, MHM6, was included in the Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth International Workshop and Conference on Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens, and studies by a number of laboratories confirmed its reactivity with CD23 (Sarfati, 1995).

Specificity
