Napthalic acid is a general name for all the organic acids present in crude oils. Most of these acids are believed to have the formula R(CH2)nCOOH where R is a cyclopentane ring and n is greater than 12. However, a multitude of other acidic organic compounds are also present and not all of them have been analyzed to date.
