General description

Vitamin B6 has six forms namely, pyridoxal, pyridoxine, pyridoxamine, pyridoxamine 5′-phosphate, pyridoxine 5′-phosphate and pyridoxal 5′-phosphate.[1] Pyridoxine is a is a water-soluble vitamin and a pyrimidine derivative of vitamin B6. It is considered heat and acid stable.[2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Pyridoxine serves as a primary source in multivitamins.[3] Pyridoxine deficiency is associated with peripheral neuropathy.[4] Vitamin B6 is an essential coenzyme for amino acid, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism.[3]

Vitamin B6 is involved in a variety of enzymatic transformations. Some recent findings also indicate an antioxidant role of the vitamin in biological systems. We set out to turn pyridoxine (1a) into a catalytic chain-breaking and hydroperoxide-decomposing antioxidant by replacing
