General description

Methanol (carbinol or methyl alcohol or wood alcohol) is a primary aliphatic alcohol miscible in water. It′s a polar solvent used in many organic synthesis reactions. Recently, it has been used in direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) technology and in the production of gasoline, olefins, and hydrocarbons.[1][2][3]

Application

Methanol can be used in the:
  • Preparation of methyl N-phenyl carbamate using urea and aniline.[4]
  • Preparation of biodiesel from rapeseed oil using metal oxide (catalyst).[5]
  • Silanization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes.[6]
