General description

The BF3-Methanol reagent is available commercially, BF3 is the catalyst and acidic in nature thereby making it suitable for the methylation of all lipid classes, including amides, FFAs and plasmalogens. However, the reagent is not stable and should be used fresh, else it will result in by-products.[1] This reagent is most commonly used for the derivatization of fatty acids and for the transesterification of lipids.[2]
