Dabigatran etexilate is a prodrug of dabigatran, a nonpeptide direct thrombin inhibitor. Dabigatron is an anticoagulant that functions by directly inhibiting both free and fibrin-bound thrombin. Dabigatron has been shown to prevent strokes in those with atrial fibrillation not caused by heart valve issues.
