Gene Information

human ... CD5(921)

General description

CD5 (cluster of differentiation 5) is a lymphocyte surface receptor. It is expressed by all T cells and the B1a subset of mature B cells (participating in the generation of low-affinity polyreactive antibodies). The CD5 gene is mapped to human chromosome 11q12.[1]
Recombinant human CD5 protein, fused to His-tag at N-terminus, was expressed in Escherichia coli.

Biochem/physiol Actions

CD5 (cluster of differentiation 5) is required for fine tuning of TCR (T-cell receptor) signaling. It also controls activation-mediated T cell death and recognizes pathogen-associated molecular patterns.[2] In T and B1 cells, CD5 negatively regulates the signaling by clonotypic antigen-specific receptor.[3] CD5 is present in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren syndrome, Grave′s Basedow thyroiditis and type 1 diabetes mellitus.[2] In infants, high levels of CD5+ cells suggest the risk of development of allergic disease.[4] The gene is also associated with peripheral T-cell lymphoma and mature B-cell neoplasms (mainly chronic lymphocytic leukemia and mantle cell lymphoma).[5][6]
