Gene Information
mouse ... GSTM1(14862)
General description
GSTM1 (glutathione S-transferase μ 1) belongs to the superfamily of glutathione-S-transferases. It belongs to the μ class of soluble GSTs. GSTM1 is strongly expressed in the kidneys.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Members of GST (glutathione S-transferase) superfamily are responsible for the metabolism of various reactive oxygen species and xenobiotics. GSTM1 (GST μ 1) plays a significant role in vascular homeostasis. Humans with null allele, GSTM1(0), are at increased risks for colon and lung cancers, hypertension, and atherosclerosis, and have higher DNA changes in atherosclerotic lesions of the abdominal aorta.
