PIP4K2A or phosphatidylinositol-5-phosphate 4-kinase, type II, alpha, is a member of the phosphatidylinositol-5-phosphate 4-kinase family that catalyzes the phosphorylation of phosphatidylinositol-5-phosphate on the fourth hydroxyl of the myo-inositol ring to form phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate. PIP4K2A plays as essential role in the phosphoinositide signal transduction cascades as the precursor to second messengers and is involved in the regulation of secretion, cell proliferation, differentiation, and motility. PIP4K2A may be one of the factors related to the regulation of the beta-globin gene expression and the different levels of Hb H in alpha-thalassemic patients.
