General description

DCAMKL1 or doublecortin-like kinase 1 contains two N-terminal doublecortin domains (which bind microtubules and regulate microtubule polymerization), a C-terminal serine/threonine protein kinase domain (which shows substantial homology to Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase), and a serine/proline-rich domain in between the doublecortin and the protein kinase domains (which mediates multiple protein-protein interactions). DCAMKL1 is a microtubule-associated kinase that can undergo autophosphorylation. DCAMKL1 has microtubule-polymerizing activity that is independent of its protein kinase activity. DCAMKL1 is involved in several different cellular processes, including neuronal migration, retrograde transport, neuronal apoptosis and neurogenesis.

Despite the critical importance of Ca(2+)/calmodulin (CaM)-dependent protein kinase (CaMK) II signaling in neuroplasticity, only a limited amount of work has so far been available regarding the presence and significance of another predominant CaMK subfamily, the CaMKI/CaMKIV family, in the

Doublecortin (DCX) is a microtubule-associated protein required for neuronal migration to the cerebral cortex. DCAMKL1 consists of an N terminus that is 65% similar to DCX throughout the entire length of DCX, but also contains an additional 360 amino acid
