GDF-5 acts as an inhibitor of nerve tissue growth. It is produced as a homodimer, non-glycosylated polypeptide chain containing 2 X 117 amino acids with a molecular weight of 26.8 kDa. To enable bacterial expression of rhGDF-5 we removed the N-terminal sequence Ala-Pro- Leu- Thr and added the Lys.
