Gene Information

human ... SFRP1(6422)

General description

The gene SFRP1 (secreted frizzled related protein 1) is mapped to human chromosome 8p22–p12, a region frequently deleted in breast cancer. It is highly expressed in normal breast tissue.

Immunogen

synthetic peptide corresponding to a sequence at the N-terminal region of human SFRP1.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Secreted Frizzled-related protein 1 (SFRP1) is a secreted inhibitor of Wnt signaling pathway. DNA damage or oxidative stress causes cellular senescence, which leads to the overexpression of sfrp1. This protein induces senescence phenotypes via the inactivation of Wnt signaling and activation of the retinoblastoma (Rb) pathway. Mutations or aberrant methylation in this gene impair the induction of senescence in several cancers, including breast cancer, bladder cancer, and colorectal tumorigenesis.

Physical form

Solution in 0.01 M phosphate buffered saline, pH 7.4, containing 15 mM sodium azide.

Cellular senescence has emerged as a critical tumor suppressive mechanism in recent years, but relatively little is known about how senescence occurs. Here, we report that secreted Frizzled-related protein 1 (SFRP1), a secreted antagonist of Wnt signaling, is oversecreted upon
