Gene Information

General description

In humans, the argonaute (Ago) subfamily consists of four isoforms hsAgo1−4. Ago proteins (~100 kDa molecular weight) contain a piwi-argonaute-zwille (PAZ) and PIWI domains. These proteins are evolutionarily conserved between species. EIF2C1/Ago1 is predominantly expressed in embryonic kidney and lung.
The eukaryotic initiation factor (EIF2C1), also known as argonaute 1, RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) catalytic component, is encoded by the gene with 19 exons and 18 introns spanning ~ 50 kb on genomic DNA, mapped to human chromosome 1p34.3. The gene is widely expressed at low and medium levels. The encoded protein is a member of argonaute family of proteins.

Application

Anti-EIF2C1/Ago1 (N-terminal) antibody produced in rabbit has also been used in:
  • immunoblotting
  • immunoprecipitation
  • immunofluorescence

Anti-EIF2C1/Ago1 (N-terminal) antibody produced in rabbit has been used in chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) and RNA-native ChIP (NChIP) experiments.

Biochem/physiol Actions

EIF2C1 is implicated in both transcriptional and post-transcriptional gene silencing. EIF2C1 levels are also increased in tumors that lack the Wilm′s tumor suppressor gene, WT1.
Eukaryotic initiation factor (EIF2C1)/ argonaute 1 plays a vital role in activation of transcriptional enhancers and also regulates alternative splicing in human cells. The encoded protein interacts with hypoxia-responsive microRNAs (HRMs) and stimulate angiogenic pathway.

Physical form

Solution in 0.01 M phosphate buffered saline, pH 7.4, containing 15 mM sodium azide.
