Translocator protein (TSPO) is a transmembrane protein expressed in the outer mitochondrial membrane. It possesses five transmembrane domains. TSPO is expressed during injury and inflammation. The protein is expressed in white and brown adipose tissue, adrenal cortex, lungs, liver, thymus and spleen. It may have a role in steroidogenesis and modulation of mitochondrial function.
