Description

General description

The paired box 6 (PAX6) gene with 14 exons, is mapped to human chromosome 11p13. The encoded protein belongs to the paired-domain Pax family. PAX6 is a 422 amino acids protein, generally expressed in the developing eye, both in neuroectoderm and surface ectoderm. It is also present in the adult eye.

Paired box 6 (PAX6) is a highly conserved transcriptional regulator involved in oculogenesis. In addition, it is also implicated in maintenance of adult eye. Mutation in the gene leads to the development of aniridia in humans and small eyes in rats.
