Biochem/physiol Actions

Staphostatins are a novel group of inhibitors with a unique specificity for the regulation of staphopains, Staphylococcus spp. cysteine proteinases. Staphostatin A and staphostatin B from S. aureus have been characterized in details. Staphostatins interact specifically with this target proteinases forming tight 1:1 and stable non-covalent complex, staphostain A with staphopain A and staphostain B with staphopain B with no cross interaction observed and with very narrow specificity limited to staphopains
Staphostatins are being explored for their possible function as an antimicrobial reagent. Mimics of staphostatins are being developed to inhibit virulence factors, Staphylococcus aureus secreted proteases and block S. aureus infection. [1]

The increasing antibiotic resistance of pathogenic bacteria calls for the development of alternative antimicrobial strategies. Possible approaches include the development of novel, broad-spectrum antibiotics as well as specific targeting of individual bacterial virulence factors. It is impossible to decide currently
