General description

Sorbitan sesquioleate (SSO) is a sorbitol derivative emulsifier. It is a common emulsifier component in topical corticosteroids, topical antibiotics, topical antifungals, moisturizing creams and lotions and topical retinoids.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Sorbitan sesquioleate is useful as a stabilizing agent in polymerization process to produce spherical acrylamide beads. It has been used in many topical agents. SSO have recently been implicated in allergic dermatitis.

Other Notes

Fatty acid composition: Oleic acid (C18:1) approx. 70%; balance primarily palmitic acid (C16:0), stearic acid (C18:0) and linoleic acid (C18:2).

In the past, sorbitan sesquioleate (SSO) was reported as an uncommon allergen, but recent data suggest SSO may be an important sensitizer. To present data on 13 of 112 dermatitis patients who reacted to SSO and/or sorbitan monooleate (SMO) on

The relationship between the antigen release from formulations in vitro and the antibody response after administration of water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) emulsion vaccines containing Haemophilus paragallinarum (Hpg) was studied in chickens. Increases of sorbitan sesquioleate volume in the formulation led to slower
