Biochem/physiol Actions

Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF-21) plays a vital role in the regulation of glucose uptake in mouse 3T3-L1 and primary human adipocytes.[1] In addition, it is also implicated in lipid metabolism and in energy balance.[2] FGF-21 plays a key role in controlling oxidative stress cell response. Overexpression of the gene has been associated with the development of acute pancreatitis, obesity, insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome.[2] Additionally, elevated expression of FGF-21 has been observed in patients with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Thus, it can be considered as a potent target for an effective treatment of diabetes.[1][3]
