General description

Sodium (Na) is one of the most important electrolytes along with chloride, calcium and potassium.[1] Na plays vital roles in the maintenance of plasma volume, pH balance, transmission of nerve impulses, and normal cell functions.[2] Healthy individuals can absorb sodium ingested in food, and kidneys maintain proper sodium balance by excreting its excess in urine. Sodium sources include table salt, milk, meat, shellfish, bread, snack food, etc.[2] Increased dietary sodium intake increases the risk of susceptibility to cardiovascular disease (CVD), most importantly with elevated blood pressure (BP).[3]

Suitability

Suitable for the determination of sodium concentration in a variety of samples.

Principle

This sodium assay kit offers a simple, two-step colorimetric assay that is based on the requirement of sodium ion as a cofactor for the enzymatic activity of b-galactosidase (βG). Endogenous mono, di, and trivalent ions, ascorbic acid, creatinine, glucose, urea and bilirubin do not interfere with the assay. The kit can detect sodium ion concentrations as low as 25mM in a variety of samples.

Sodium magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a powerful, non-invasive technique to assess sodium distribution within the kidney. Here we undertook pre-clinical and clinical studies to quantify the corticomedullary sodium gradient in healthy individuals and in a porcine model of diuresis.

Questions

1–3 of 3 Questions
  1. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  2. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  3. How can we adapt the protocol for intracellular sodium measurement?

    1 answer
    1. The Sodium Assay Kit (Colorimetric) (ab211096) is designed for detecting sodium ions (Na+) in serum, urine, and saliva. However, it has not been tested on lysates, so its suitability for intracellular sodium measurement is uncertain. Additionally, there is no specific protocol available for intracellular sodium measurement using this kit.
