Biochem/physiol Actions
Lymphotoxin-α (LT-α), also known as tumor necrosis factor-β (TNF-β), and lymphotoxin-β (LT-β) are members of the TNF family. Secreted LT-α complexes with the membrane-associated LT-β to generate two types of heterotrimers, LTα1/β2 and LTα2/β1. The predominant membrane-bound heterotrimer LTα1/β2 binds and activates only to the lymphotoxin β receptor (LT-βR). The other heterotrimer LTα2/β1 binds and activates TNF RI, TNF RII, and LT-βR. LT is critical for normal lymphoid organ development. LT is expressed by activated naive CD4 cells, unpolarized IL-2-secreting effectors, and Th1 effector cells.
Mutations in LTA (lymphotoxin-α) are associated with myasthenia gravis.
Physical form
Lyophilized from a 0.2 μm filtered solution in phosphate buffered saline containing 0.5 mg bovine serum albumin.
Analysis Note
The biological activity is measured in a cytotoxicity assay using the TNF-susceptible mouse L929 cell line in the presence of actinomycin D.
Storage Class

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) alpha and TNF-beta are proinflammatory cytokines thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of myasthenia gravis (MG). To examine whether TNF polymorphisms are associated with MG, MG subgroups, and the presence of titin and ryanodine-receptor antibodies.
