General description

Lectin is present in several plants and some animals. It is a tetramer composed of identical sub-units.[1]

Application

Lectin has been used in differential plating to separate Sertoli cells from the isolated cell population.[2] It has also been used in differential plating of spermatogonial stem cells.[3]

Biochem/physiol Actions

DSL is not blood group specific but has an affinity for oligomers of N-acetyl-glucosamine and N-acetyllactosamine. The lectin is a glycoprotein containing approx. 35% carbohydrate.
Lectin identifies and binds to carbohydrate complexes that extend from glycolipids and glycoproteins. It also binds to free-floating glycans, such as monosaccharides.[4]

Quality

Highly purified.

Preparation Note

Purified by affinity chromatography

Analysis Note

Agglutination activity is expressed in μg/ml and is determined from serial dilutions of a 1 mg/ml solution in phosphate buffered saline, pH 6.8. This activity is the lowest concentration to agglutinate a 2% suspension of human erythrocytes after 1 hr incubation at 25 °C.

13 - Non Combustible Solids

Sertoli cells are somatic cells in testis essential for spermatogenesis, that support the development, maturation, and differentiation of germ cells. Sertoli cells are metabolically highly active and physiologically regulated by external signals, particularly factors in the blood stream. In disease
