General description

Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is an immunomodulatory factor produced by certain subsets of T lymphocytes.[1] It is a monomeric glycoprotein and proinflammatory cytokine,[2] and contains four-a-helix bundles in its structure.[3] IL-2 gene is mapped to human chromosome 4q27.[4] Recombinant human IL-2 is expressed in human 293 cells as a glycoprotein with a calculated molecular mass of 15 kDa. This protein is manufactured in human cells using an all-human production system, with full chemically defined ingredients and with no serum. The human cells expression system allows human-like glycosylation and folding, and often supports better stability of the protein in culture.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is a lymphokine that promotes the long-term proliferation of activated T cells and acts as an essential mediator of the immune response. IL-2 signals through the IL-2 receptor, majorly via the IL-2Ra subunit.[3] IL-2 signaling via IL-2/anti-IL-2 immune complexes aids immune surveillance improvement during suppressed immunity. It also effectively controls infection.[5] IL-2 plays a role in the activation and proliferation of natural killer (NK) cells,[3] induces γ-inter-feron and B cell growth factor secretion and modulates the expression of the IL-2 receptor. It also elicits anti-tumor immunity.[4] An elevated expression level of IL-2 along with other interleukins is observed in colorectal cancer.[6]
