General description

TMEM55A (transmembrane protein 55A) is a type of phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate (PtdIns-4,5-P2) 4-phosphatases, and is also called PtdIns-4,5-P2 4-phosphatase type II. It resides in the membranes of late endosome or lysosomes, and has a ubiquitous pattern of expression.

Application

Biochem/physiol Actions

TMEM55A (transmembrane protein 55A) is responsible for the production of phosphatidylinositol-5-phosphate (PtdIns-5-P), by hydrolyzing the 4-position phosphate of PtdIns-4,5-P2. PtdIns-4,5-P2 is in turn involved in the intracellular-membrane trafficking and the regulation of cytoskeleton dynamics. Increase in the expression level of TMEM55A leads to enhanced EGFR (epidermal growth factor receptor) degradation, in the presence of EGF.
