General description
The gene SLC31A1 (solute carrier family 31, member 1) is also referred to as CTR1 and is predominantly expressed in the liver and kidney. The gene is mapped to human chromosome 9q32. Though the protein is mainly localized to the plasma membrane, in human carcinoma cell lines it is observed to be distributed in cytoplasmic vesicular compartments.

Biochem/physiol Actions
The gene SLC31A1 (solute carrier family 31, member 1) encodes a copper transporter that is localized to the cell membrane. It is involved in the uptake of dietary copper. Overexpression of this protein leads to copper accumulation in cells. The encoded protein is also involved in the cellular accumulation and toxicity of platinum-based anti-cancer drugs, such as cisplatin. During early embryogenesis, it is found to play a role in propagating the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signal.
