Gene Information

human ... SPATA9(83890)

General description

SPATA9 (spermatogenesis associated 9) is a gene expressed in human testis and is mapped to chromosome 5q14. This gene spans 1595bp, with an open reading frame of 762-bp. The encoded protein consists of 254 amino acids and has a single transmembrane domain. SPATA9 mRNA is also expressed in pancreas.

Application

All Prestige Antibodies Powered by Atlas Antibodies are developed and validated by the Human Protein Atlas (HPA) project and as a result, are supported by the most extensive characterization in the industry.

The Human Protein Atlas project can be subdivided into three efforts: Human Tissue Atlas, Cancer Atlas, and Human Cell Atlas. The antibodies that have been generated in support of the Tissue and Cancer Atlas projects have been tested by immunohistochemistry against hundreds of normal and disease tissues and through the recent efforts of the Human Cell Atlas project, many have been characterized by immunofluorescence to map the human proteome not only at the tissue level but now at the subcellular level. These images and the collection of this vast data set can be viewed on the Human Protein Atlas (HPA) site by clicking on the Image Gallery link. We also provide Prestige Antibodies® protocols and other useful information.

Biochem/physiol Actions

SPATA9 (spermatogenesis associated 9) gene is completely inactive in infertile males with Sertoli-cell-only syndrome. Its expression also varies in patients with spermatogenic arrest. Therefore, this gene might play a role in infertility, by regulating sprermatogenesis and development of testis. This protein is found on the surface of sperm. It is involved in fertilization, by participating in sperm capacitation and acrosome reaction.

Features and Benefits

Prestige Antibodies® are highly characterized and extensively validated antibodies with the added benefit of all available characterization data for each target being accessible via the Human Protein Atlas portal linked just below the product name at the top of this page. The uniqueness and low cross-reactivity of the Prestige Antibodies® to other proteins are due to a thorough selection of antigen regions, affinity purification, and stringent selection. Prestige antigen controls are available for every corresponding Prestige Antibody and can be found in the linkage section.

Every Prestige Antibody is tested in the following ways:
  • IHC tissue array of 44 normal human tissues and 20 of the most common cancer type tissues.
  • Protein array of 364 human recombinant protein fragments.

Li Jun Cheng et al.
Biology of reproduction, 68(1), 190-198 (2002-12-21)
By hybridizing human adult testis cDNA microarrays with human adult and embryo testis cDNA probes, a novel human testis gene NYD-SP16 was identified. NYD-SP16 expression was 6.44-fold higher in adult testis than in fetal testis. NYD-SP16 contains 1595 base pairs

Fertility and sterility, 86(4 Suppl), 1228-1234 (2006-09-12)
To investigate the functional role of human testicular protein NYD-SP16. Controlled experimental study. University research laboratory. ICR strain of mice. Testicular tissue and sperms were collected from 12- to 16-week-old male mice; cumulus-oocyte complexes were harvested from mature female mice
