Biochem/physiol Actions
FTSJ1 (FtsJ RNA methyltransferase homolog 1) plays a pivotal role in the synthesis of rRNA. It consists of a putative S-adenosyl-L-methionine (AdoMet)-binding domain responsible for the AdoMet-dependent methyltransferase activity. It may have impact on the translational regulation during brain development. Impact of the gene during the post transcriptional modification of tRNA also has been reported. Mutation in the FTSJ1 gene leads to nonsyndromic X-linked mental retardation.
