Biochem/physiol Actions

RAC-β serine/threonine-protein kinase is an enzyme encoded by the AKT2 gene in humans and is mapped to chromosome region 19q13.1-q13.2. It belongs to a distinct subfamily of protein-serine/threonine kinases containing Src homology 2-like domains. Alterations of AKT2 may contribute to the pathogenesis of ovarian carcinomas. The protein kinase is thought to be a key mediator of the insulin signal transduction process and plays a role in glucose metabolism. It also mediates the development or maintenance of proper adipose tissue and islet mass. It is an important protein in PI3K signaling pathway and is overexpressed in a variety of malignant tumors. AKT2 may be a useful molecular marker for predicting the prognosis of meningioma. It plays a novel role in neuroblastoma tumorigenesis and may be important for developing novel therapeutics for the treatment of clinically aggressive neuroblastoma.

Activation of PI3K/AKT pathway correlates with poor prognosis in patients with neuroblastoma. Our previous studies have demonstrated that PI3K/AKT signaling is critical for the oncogenic transformations induced by gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) and its receptor, GRP-R, in neuroblastoma. Moreover, PI3K/AKT-dependent oncogenic
