Biochem/physiol Actions

Cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 1B (p27Kip1) is an enzyme inhibitor that, in humans, is encoded by the CDKN1B gene and belongs to the Cip/Kip family of cyclin dependent kinase (Cdk) inhibitor proteins. It acts as a multifunctional protein to control critical steps of neuronal migration through activities that go far beyond cell cycle regulation. Mutation in CDKN1B gene causes an autosomal dominant disorder called multiple endocrine neoplasia type 4 (MEN4). The cell cycle inhibitor CDKN1B is involved in ERK1/2-mediated MMP-9 expression through activation of the NF-κB binding motif, which leads to the migration and invasion of bladder cancer cells induced by IL-7.
