Biochem/physiol Actions

Methionine adenosyltransferase (MAT) is an enzyme responsible for S-adenosylmethionine (AdoMet) synthesis and is encoded by two genes, MAT1A and MAT2A. MAT1A and MAT2A encode for liver-specific and non-liver-specific MAT respectively.[1] MAT2A expression is associated with lower AdoMet levels and a dedifferentiated phenotype. The gene expression is modulated as an adaptive response of the cell to l-methionine availability through its conversion to AdoMet.[2] MAT2A is involved in the transmethylation pathway in the metabolic response to hyperoxia in lung epithelium.[3]

Methionine adenosyltransferase (MAT) is a critical cellular enzyme which catalyzes the formation of S-adenosylmethionine, the principal methyl donor. In mammals, two different genes, MAT1A and MAT2A, encode for liver-specific and non-liver-specific MAT, respectively. We have cloned and characterized a 1.4-kb

S-Adenosylmethionine (SAM, AdoMet) is the most important methyl donor used for synthesis of nucleic acids, phospholipids, creatine, and polyamines and for methylation of many bioactive molecules. The metabolic response of the lung to oxidative stress of hyperoxia requires increased RNA
