Biochem/physiol Actions

Protein tyrosine phosphatase, receptor type, C is an enzyme encoded by the PTPRC gene in humans. It is also known as CD45 antigen (CD stands for cluster of differentiation) and is originally called leukocyte common antigen (LCA). PTPRC acts as a binding receptor for galectin-3 and helps in inducing apoptosis of Jurkat cells. It plays a novel role on innate immune cells in promoting lymphopenia-induced T cell proliferation. The leukocyte-specific tyrosine phosphatase impacts T cell development and activation by modulating TCR signaling.

Galectin-3 has been reported to induce apoptosis of Jurkat cells through binding receptors such as CD45. CD45RABC is heavily O-glycosylated and N-glycosylated, while CD45RO is only N-glycosylated. In this study, no apoptosis induced by galectin-3 was detected in CD45RO-transfected cells

The leukocyte-specific tyrosine phosphatase, CD45, severely impacts T cell development and activation by modulating TCR signaling. CD45-deficient (CD45KO) mice have reduced peripheral T cell numbers where CD8 T cells are underrepresented. In this article, we show that CD45KO mice are
