Biochem/physiol Actions

p16 (also known as cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2A, multiple tumor suppressor 1) is a tumor suppressor protein encoded by the CDKN2A gene in humans and is mapped on chromosome 9p21. The p16 gene encodes a negative regulator of the cell cycle. It is an important factor in carcinogenesis and its expression is linked to oncogene-induced senescence. p16 upregulation may be associated with the induction of senescence and indicates a senescence barrier while its downregulation is found in malignant progression. Its inhibitor may act as a physiological suppressor of proliferation and cells that are unable to produce the inhibitor may be prone to neoplastic transformation.

Neuroblastoma is a pediatric cancer with significant genomic and biologic heterogeneity. p16 and ARF, two important tumor-suppressor genes on chromosome 9p21, are inactivated commonly in most cancers, but paradoxically overexpressed in neuroblastoma. Here, we report that exon γ in p16
