Biochem/physiol Actions

IKK-β (inhibitor of nuclear factor κ-B kinase subunit β) is a protein encoded by the IKBKB gene in humans. It helps in mediating tumor necrosis-factor α (TNFα) induced invasion of human mesenchymal stem cell (hMSC) to sites of tissue injury. IKK-2 activity suppression leads to reduced expression of proteolytic enzymes and impaired invasive capacity. Its activation is central to NF-κB signaling.[1] IKK-β phosphorylation by IκB kinase (IKK) triggers the degradation of IκB and migration of cytoplasmic κB to the nucleus, where it promotes the transcription of its target genes. It is activated by phosphorylation of its main subunit, IKKβ, at the activation loop sites.
