General description

14-3-3ε is a protein encoded by the YWHAE (tyrosine 3-monooxygenase/tryptophan 5-monooxygenase activation protein ε), which is a DISC1 (Disrupted-in-Schizophrenia 1)-interacting protein. It belongs to a family of highly conserved proteins called 14-3-3, which has seven isoforms namely, σ, β, γ, ε, τ, θ, and η. They also contain two isotypes, α and δ, which are phosphorylated. 14-3-3ε is expressed in human brain, and is the oldest isoform of this family.

Biochem/physiol Actions

14-3-3 proteins are involved in a multitude of biological processes and exhibit a regulatory role in processes such as apoptotic cell death, mitogenic signal transduction, and cell cycle control.
14-3-3 proteins are involved in a multitude of biological processes and exhibit a regulatory role in processes such as apoptotic cell death, mitogenic signal transduction, and cell cycle control. 14-3-3ε interacts with various proteins (cdc25 phosphatases, Raf1, and IRS1) in diverse signal trasduction pathways suggesting a role to 14-3-3ε in biological phenomenons such as cell division and regulation of insulin sensitivity. There is a growing emergence of correlative data linking 14-3-3 proteins to various human diseases such as neurodegenerative conditions, cancer, and heart diseases.
