Cell Line Origin

Rabbit epidermis, cottontail

Cell Line Description

From minced ear epidermis of adult male cottontail rabbit with papillomatosis. Cells can be cultured continuously at pH 7.4 and 37°C but may also be adequately maintained at 25°C. Developed for studies of epidermis specific virus replication. Also know as Sf1Ep (NBL-11).

Application

Virus replication studies (may be useful for viruses producing lesions in skin)

Culture Medium

EMEM (EBSS) + 2mM Glutamine + 1% Non Essential Amino Acids (NEAA) + 10% Foetal Bovine Serum (FBS).

Subculture Routine

Split sub-confluent cultures (70-80%) 1:4 to 1:6 i.e. seeding at 2-4x10,000 cells/cm2 using 0.25% trypsin/EDTA; 5% CO2; 37°C. Finite lifespan. Maximum of 80 passages expected. Cells become spindle shaped when confluent.
