Cell Line Origin

Rat liver hepatoma

Cell Line Description

Derived from the Morris Hepatoma but is distinct from HTC cell line (Sigma Catalogue number. 93120108). Immunological experiments demonstrate that the cultures synthesise and secrete rat serum albumin and synthesise tyrosine aminotransferase. Functions of the cells include the conjugation and metabolism of testosterone and bilirubin and the production of serum complement component, especially C9. Epithelial cells forming compact smooth bordered colonies.

Hormone and Enzymatic studies

Culture Medium

EMEM (EBSS) + 2mM Glutamine + 1% Non Essential Amino Acids (NEAA) + 10% Foetal Bovine Serum (FBS) or Ham′s F10 + 10% Horse Serum (HS).

Subculture Routine

Split sub-confluent cultures (70-80%) 1:3 to 1:6 i.e. seeding at 2-4x10,000 cells/cm2 using 0.25% trypsin or trypsin/EDTA; 5% CO2; 37°C.
