General description

ADAM12 or Meltrin alpha is a protein that is involved in myoblast fusion which is similar to sperm-egg fusion aided by ADAMs 1 and 2. Two forms of ADAM12 have been described: ADAM12-S and ADAM12-L (short and long forms). The short form is a soluble, alternatively spliced form that lacks the trans membrane and cytoplasmic domains. The short form of ADAM12 has been reported to provoke myogenesis. ADAM12 is known to have regulation pathways via Src and Src tyrosine kinases.
Recognizes the full length, long form of ADAM-12 but not the soluble form of ADAM-12. Detects bands at 116 kDa (minor band), 92 kDa (major band), and cleaved products at 68 kDa and 40 kDa in reduced immunoblots.
The family of AMP deaminases enzymes catalyze the deamination of adenosine monophosphate to inosine monophosphate.
