Non-ionic surfactant, used to solubilize cerebral GABA receptors.[1] Used in solubilization of proteins and lipids of the scallop gill ciliary membrane[2] and of membranes from breast cancer tumors.[3]

Nonidet™ P 40 was an octyl phenol ethylene oxide condensate with an average of 9 moles of ethylene oxides per mole of phenol.
