Biochem/physiol Actions

(2S,3R)- 2,3-Dihydroxybutanoic acid is a normally occurring carboxylic acid in humans. Metabolic profiling of urinary organic acids from patients with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (juvenile-onset) have revealed significantly elevated levels of this metabolite. The normal urinary constituent (2S,3R)-2,3- dihydroxybutanoic acid was found to diminish in urine incubated with E. coli.
